Drawer Runners or Glides : Step-by-Step Guide

How are the drawers of your cabinet made up?

Maybe you’re wondering how your cabinet drawer slides?

In this blog you will know and learn what and how the cabinet drawer is made.

What exactly is your drawer slide called and how is it attached to the drawer cabinet.

Cabinet Drawer

A client asked us to build a room cabinet or what is called a dresser or closet, so I will share with you how we built the cabinet drawer.

Cabinet drawers are the only thing I thought to blog about because when I didn’t get into glass and aluminum I would be amazed at how the drawer slides. Of course, like you, you are also interested in knowing how it actually works..(I don’t know if my terminology is correct)heheh…

That’s why you’re here now in this article to find out and learn how to make a cabinet drawer.

As I said, the drawer is just part of the room cabinet that our client has us make.

I won’t ramble on any more, let’s find out what actually makes the drawer slide.

Drawer Runners or Glides

The thing that makes the drawer slide is the so-called drawer runners or better known as glides!

it consists of inner/drawer member, outer/cabinet member and intermediate member.

Ball bearing is the reason why it slides, its bearing is attached to the inner and outer member. The intermediate member slides so we can pull and push the drawer.

Now that you know the parts of drawer runners or glides and how they work.

Let’s start how to attach it to your cabinet.

Needed to attach drawer runners or glides

Of course you need hand tools such as: drill, riveter and blind rivet.

Remember that these tools mentioned are only for attaching the glides to the drawer…(not for building the whole cabinet) because you need more tools and materials to build the whole room cabinet.

Since this blog is only about how the cabinet drawer slides so those are the only tools we will use.

The Installation of the Members

Let’s get started! first we will remove the inner or drawer member. it’s easy to separate the inner member from the outer member, when you pull the glides you will see something sticking out like a sharp plastic, all you have to do is press it on the side and gradually its lock will be removed and you can separate it already.

Drawer Runners Or Glides Parts

Make sure the inner member is aligned before you drill and rivet.

When it’s aligned and the size of the drawer is right, you can start drilling and riveting.
Both sides the placement of drawer runners or glides in the drawer.

After you have attached the inner member, attach the outer member as well (this is the one that is attached to your cabinet).

Also, once the outer is aligned, you can drill and rivet it.

And since you have attached both the inner and outer members to their respective positions, you can return the drawer to the cabinet to test if the drawer slides smoothly.

If your drawer slides properly….Congratulations! you did the right thing.
